Welp, the new school year in full swing! Binders are still in one piece, and backpacks are virtually free from sticky spills. Standardized test scores are in, and parents everywhere are combing the interwebs, wondering, "Is there a math tutor near me?!" Rest assured, of course there are several. And below are some points to consider when searching for the right tutor.
Personality:
I'm putting this at the top of the list. No matter how much experience a tutor has, no significant progress will be made if they can't connect with your child. Trustworthiness, compassion, and a friendly disposition or sense of humor are all absolutely necessary for a student to feel comfortable speaking up when they don't understand a concept.
Testimonials:
Who better to ask than a former or current client? Look through your potential tutor's testimonials. There should be several, and they should be screaming this person's praises from the rooftops.
Experience
Okay, I know what I said about experience earlier. But obviously, it's important. You want to know your tutor has had experience working one on one with students in a teaching capacity. A tutor needs to be able to assess exactly what a student needs and how to get there, and that only comes from working with many many students over a long period of time.
Price:
It goes without saying that cost is an important factor. But the cheaper option rarely yields the best results. Neither does the most expensive one. If your child is struggling in school, it's crucial to find the core of the issue. Simply helping to finish homework on time is just putting a bandaid on a wound that won't heal. Don't break the bank, but be sure to pay for the highest quality tutor possible.
Proximity
Finding a "math tutor near me" might not be exactly what you're looking for after all. Online tutoring can be far more effective than in-person. I've worked with students in various cities and states. Much more than proximity, it always led to success because of our connection.
So I hope it helps to keep this list in mind while your search continues. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at jason@tutoringmindset.com.
